Background
Although most free users engage with Quiz Games, retention remains low. Other Kahoot Kids apps use reward systems, while Quiz Games relies on a daily challenge, which is not strong enough to motivate most users to play more quizzes.
Discovery
After gathering data on current app use for Quiz Games, we landed on these conclusions: Most users, paid and free, play only one quiz per day and about 58.7 percent complete the daily challenge consistently. The number of free quizzes in the daily challenge does not impact conversion and users engage equally with classic and rocket race modes.
Problem Statement
Brainstorming
Sessions were conducted with the pedagogy manager and learning designer to determine an ethical way to engage children by sparking their curiosity and motivating them to continue learning by playing more quizzes.
Competitor Analysis
A landscape analysis of industry apps showed a consistent model offering immediate rewards that contribute to a bigger project. We then evaluated the eight existing Kahoot learning apps to guide the development of a scalable rewards framework for Quiz Games, with the aim of creating a unified system that can eventually integrate and connect all reward mechanisms across the Kahoot learning ecosystem.
Findings
We concluded on staying away from a "currency" based reward or focusing heavily on accuracy. A decision was made to immediately reward user for completion and consistency, and link these rewards to building a long term creation, one that helps expand their imagination by encouraging interactiveness and creativity
Analysis & Planning
Based on our findings, the first step was to determine the logic behind unlocking rewards.
Current app metrics reveal that it takes children 3 minutes on average to complete a quiz, and they complete on average 1-3 quizzes per session.
In order to keep kids engaged and encourage them to continue playing and learning, we determined that 3 quizzes - at just under 10 minutes on average - as the adequate completion rate to unlock one reward (sticker).
Point Calculation: Kids can earn up to 3 stars for each quiz, with stars awarded based on the percentage of quiz completion. Collecting 9 stars unlocks a new sticker.
Worlds Structure and Unlocking System: Stickers are gradually awarded as kids accumulate stars. These 30 collectible stickers are added to the world (sticker book) they belong to. A new world becomes available every time they finish the previous one to keep sparking curiosity and motivating them to continue learning.
Ideation
Adding the feature of a rewards system to Quiz Games means restructuring the current user flows in different ways. With these wireframes I determined the succession of interactions for each of these flows, and the introduction and behavior of new UI elements.
1. Unlocking a reward
2. Adding UI to access worlds on home screen, sticker book structure and sticker behavior
